There was always the old trick about a #2 pencil fitting between the bores inside the water jacket when talking about which 396's can be bored to 454 size. If the pencil fits between the bores,the block is too thin,if you cant fit it,the block should take the bore. WebAug 27, 2011 · Joe is correct, 65-67 396 engines were often built on the same block casting as 427 engines. Not only can those blocks safely be bored to build a 427, they can be bored over size after that. It is particularly common with the early blocks that did not have a groove in the rear cam bearing bore.

They are TRW from SUmmit Racing. They are the 427 pistons, no need for special rods or cutting pistons. 454 uses the same bore as a 427. If you have the block bored you will need to upsize your piston to your bore.

These engines have a good stroke rod length ratio. I think very similar to a 327, which was ideal. 350 SBC used the same length rods as a 327. To fix a 350 ya' need to put 6" rods in it to make it more like a 327.
