Sure, there are other factors, but just trying to get an idea...are we talking a week, a month, a year? (Trying to gauge just how damaging the borax is over time). WebPlain borax works fine. Get the iron red hot and pull it out of the fire and pour a little from a spoon on the joint. It will foam up and then melt to a glassy coating. Anhydrous borax works fine too. It gets to that state without the foaming.

The problem with Borax is that it is highly corrosive when liquid, especially bad for the forge lining. Borax can easily eat through the lining in a session.
